Global crime is declining but have we created a safer world?

Global crime has gone down substantially in large parts of the world for the last two decades. In some major cities, the homicide rates for example have declined by more than 80%. What are the explanations of the drastic changes and what lies ahead in the future? Is the world really becoming a safer and more civilized place to live in or have the way we commit crime changed?
