We are looking for bio based materials that have durability

June 12, 2015

"There has been a very strong focus on biodegradable materials that we should be able to throw away. But the last ten to twenty years we have started looking for bio based materials that have durability and a function for a certain period. That changes things dramatically from a material perspective in what you need to do." Mats KG Johansson

"There is a big difference in the amount of energy you need to have timber components to construct a building if you compare with concrete. There is a tremendous penalty to be paid in energy to produce the concrete. Nature is doing the job for us with wood.” Lars Berglund

Mats KG Johansson, Professor in Polymer Technology at the department of Fibre & Polymer Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lars Berglund, Professor and director of Wallenberg Wood Science Center at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, are guests in Crosstalks on Green Infrastructure and the forest as a key to a more sustainable society.

Green innovation: the forest as a resource for a better future is released on June 16 at www.crosstalks.tv, 6 PM CET.

Green innovation: the forest as a resource for a better future
Healthy, thriving forests are crucial for sustaining life on earth. Humanity´s impact on climate and ecological systems is threatening the forests. But the forests are not just victims; they could also hold many keys to a more sustainable society. Biomaterials from forests can be used to produce new interesting products that are sustainable and biodegradable and could therefore help mitigate climate problems. We discuss the new and innovative ways in which we can use the forest as a resource.

Guests in the studio:
Lars Berglund, Professor, director of Wallenberg Wood Science Center, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Mats KG Johansson, Professor in Polymer Technology at the department of Fibre & Polymer Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Lucas Dawson, researcher at the Department of physical geography at Stockholm University

On Skype: Catherine Cobden, Executive Vice President of the Forest Products Association of Canada

Crosstalks – Where great minds meet!
Crosstalks is an international academic talk show, broadcast once a month by two of Swedens top universities – KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University. It is a platform for discussions on global challenges in an open and on-going dialogue with viewers around the world. The tone of the programme is relaxed, with a twinkle in its eye: just like a good, engaging lecture.
